Dynamic Range of Motion (DROM)

Why do we call it "Dynamic" Range of Motion?

By using sophisticated sensors within the inclinometers, the Dynamic ROM system records the patient's entire ROM through the plane of movement and displays it in a graphical representation on the computer screen.

 

Unlike other systems which simply give you a static endpoint measurement of ROM, Dynamic ROM captures the entire movement. The figure to your left shows a typical Dynamic ROM recording of the dynamic motion of the spine during three repetitions of lumbar flexion and extension.

The numbers correspond with the figure to the left showing the patient's motions.

 

The inclinometers are attached to straps placed over T12 and S1. The recording of the sensor at S1 is subtracted from the recording at T12 to produce the DIFFerential recording graph which represents the true motion of the patient's lumbar during lumbar flexion and extension motion. The flattened DIFF tracing line on each repetition during end-point indicates that both sensors are moving at the same rate of speed, and that the lumbar lordosis stopped unfolding before the end-point of trunk flexion had been reached.

 

With this information the clinician can observe and assess the quality and the pattern of the patient's motion as well as the quantity of the ROM. Dynamic Range of Motion from Noromed elevates range of motion testing from a simple measurement tool to a true diagnostic tool.

How are the tests performed?

One of the biggest advantages of the Noromed Dynamic Range of Motion system is it's ease of use. Simply attach the small lightweight inclinometers to the patient with the Velcro straps and begin! The software is intuitive and allows you to choose from 26 different AMA recommended protocols or, within a few minutes, you can create your own!

After choosing the protocol you wish to use and attaching the lightweight inclinometers, you can use the software's graphics to demonstrate the required movement to the patient. From that point on it's simply a matter of pressing the foot pedal and having the patient perform the requested movement 3 times without stopping. No stopping to "zero" the inclinometers, no need to stop the patient at flexion and/or extension to awkwardly press a button to send the reading to the computer! After the patient has completed the test and come to rest, just press the foot pedal again. The software will instantly let you know if the test met the AMA guidelines for reproducibility and, if so, will automatically move you on to the next test in your selected sequence.

What's included with the software?

The operating software for Dynamic ROM is flexible, intuitive and easy to use. A "Windows" style program, it takes only a few minutes to master. The program is loaded with extras that increase the usefulness of the program:

 

  • Generate regional or whole body Impairment Ratings based on the 5th Edition of the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment.

  • A Split Screen option allows you to view previous recordings side by side with current recordings.

  • With the "Redraw" function you can replay any test result, a useful patient eductaion and clinical analysis tool.

  • Insert on-screen comments simply by double clicking anywhere on the screen.

  • Use the Notepad function to add more in-depth commentary to your test reports.

 

As an additional Outcome Assessment tool, the Dynamic ROM program also includes a selection of pain questionnaires. Choose from the Revised Oswestry Chronic Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire, the Roland-Morris Acute Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire or the Neck Pain Disability Index. The software will even automatically score and graph the test results over time!

Dynamic SEMG

Dynamic SEMG allows you to expand upon the data gathered with Static SEMG.

The Dynamic SEMG module of the MES 9000 allows for the recording of up to 8 channels of SEMG simultaneously. The MES 9000 offers you the flexibility to monitor and record the data in its raw state or as integrated data.

The powerful and user-friendly software simplifies the recording of multiple muscle groups of antagonist and synergist muscles to facilitate assessment and case documentation. In addition, the system includes pre-programmed protocols and analysis for assessment, muscle education and relaxation training. The clinician may also program custom protocols - quickly and simply.
